The announcement was made by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who affirmed the decision following discussions with Dravid.
Dravid’s contract had initially ended after the ODI World Cup final last year, but he was asked to continue his duties along with other support staff for the tour to South Africa in December-January, with the tenure yet to be finalized.Speaking on the matter, Shah revealed, “After the (2023) World Cup, Rahul bhai had to leave for the South Africa tour immediately. We did not get to meet in between which finally happened today.”
He further asserted, “Why are you worried about a contract for such a senior person like Rahul Dravid? Rahul bhai will remain the coach in the T20 World Cup.”
However, Shah hinted at further discussions to be held ahead of the marquee event, acknowledging the busy schedule of the Indian cricket team.
“I will speak with him whenever there is time, there are back-to-back series happening right now,” he stated.
In addition to Dravid’s extension, Shah emphasized the BCCI’s mandate regarding workload management for centrally contracted players during the Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
“This is the BCCI’s mandate. The BCCI is the supreme body and whatever it decides the franchises will have to follow — we are above the franchises,” he asserted, underlining the importance of adhering to the workload management guidelines set by the board.
