NEW DELHI: England‘s Joe Root, a prominent batter and off-spinner, achieved a milestone by completing 100 wickets in international cricket. He reached this feat on Saturday by dismissing Rohit Sharma during India’s second innings in the third Test of the five-match series at Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot.
Root’s 100 wickets are distributed across formats as follows: 67 in Tests, 27 in ODIs, and 6 in T20Is.In his international career spanning 341 matches, Root has maintained an average of 46.96 and an economy of 3.92, with his best bowling figures being 5/8.It’s worth noting that James Anderson holds the record for being England’s highest wicket-taker across all formats with a remarkable tally of 983 international wickets. Root’s achievement adds to his versatility as a player, contributing both with the bat and the ball at the highest level of the game.
In the ongoing Test, England found themselves bundled out for 319 in their first innings in response to India’s 445. Opener Ben Duckett played a stellar innings, scoring 153 runs off 151 balls, adorned with 23 fours and two sixes.
However, apart from captain Ben Stokes (41) and Ollie Pope (39), no other batsman managed to build a substantial innings.
India’s bowling attack, led by Mohammad Siraj (4/84), Ravindra Jadeja (2/51), and Kuldeep Yadav (2/77), made crucial contributions. Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin also chipped in with a wicket each.
With a 126-run lead, India began their second innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his impressive form, scoring another century, while Shubman Gill registered another half-century.
At the end of the day, India stood at 196/2, establishing a commanding 322-run lead. The strong batting performance has put India in a favorable position in the match.
