NEW DELHI: New Zealand‘s cricket captain, Mitchell Santner, expressed confidence that his team, considered underdogs, will put up a strong fight against a full-strength Australian team in the upcoming three-match Twenty20 series.
The matches will take place in Wellington on Wednesday, followed by games in Auckland on Friday and Sunday. The last time these two teams met in the shortest format, New Zealand emerged victorious with an 89-run win at the World Cup in Sydney in October 2022.
However, Australia have since won the 50-over World Cup and recently clinched a 2-1 T20 series win against the West Indies.
Santner acknowledged that New Zealand are often viewed as underdogs but emphasized that his team is unfazed by this label. He expressed excitement about the challenge of facing one of the world’s best teams and highlighted the special nature of the trans-Tasman clash.
Santner praised Australia’s strong squad and acknowledged that they possess all the necessary skills to excel in the series.
The New Zealand captain emphasized the importance of sticking to their own plans and strategies. He acknowledged the strength and explosiveness of the Australian team and emphasized the need for New Zealand to stay focused and resilient throughout the matches. Santner highlighted the team’s desire to put up a strong fight and expressed optimism about the series.
Australia, led by captain Mitchell Marsh, will be fielding a full-strength team. David Warner, who recently retired from Test cricket, is on the verge of surpassing Aaron Finch as Australia’s all-time leading scorer in men’s T20s, needing just 54 runs to achieve this milestone.
New Zealand have chosen to rest star batsman Kane Williamson but have added experienced seamer Trent Boult to their bowling attack.
Santner acknowledged the talent and explosiveness of the Australian team and emphasized the need for New Zealand to stay resilient and focused. He expressed the team’s determination to give their best in the series and looked forward to the upcoming matches.
Following the T20 series, two Test matches will be played between the two teams.
